First, Think about keeping your furniture and accessories in the small size range. One method to make good use of space is to use underbed storage, in lieu of bureas which will make the room look bigger but still allow storage of clothing. All small scaled items might be monotonous and you will want to break that up by using a few bigger pieces, so even though you may choose to go for the underbed storage, include a big cheval mirror, which not only gives a bit of drama and interest, but also gives off the feeling that the room is larger than it really is.

1. The colours that you use on your walls in a small bedroom should be neutral tones and only 2 or 3 hues of this colour should be used in the room. It is important that you paint the moldings and doors in the room in the same colours as the walls by using contrasting colours you will be making the room feel smaller than it is. The ceilings should be painted white as they will provide a sense of height to the room.

An interior designer talk about her home decor

By Helen Racanelli

When I did the mural on the ceiling in the bathroom, I had just moved up to Montreal. These designs, known as Alpona, are usually painted on the floors but because I felt a little like my life turned upside down, somehow painting the ceiling was a way to make me feel at home in an unknown city. The vanity was custom-made to match the kitchen but we added one of my designs onto the vanity and mirror to make it more fun. Our first purchase as husband and wife was the washer/dryer set. Coming from a small apartment in New York with questionable laundry facilities, this was a momentous occasion for me and I refuse to cover it or hide it. This room is now my favorite space in the apartment!

The entryway was a spur of the moment weekend project last summer. This space is on it’s own floor so we kept it black and white to offset all the colors in the rest of the house.

The main living area is a constant evolution for us as it’s usually the initial resting space for all of our new purchases. The ceilings are very high so bookcases not only store our large collection of books but also bring the eye up! The colorful elements in the room are great travel finds from street artisans around the world. We appreciate the folk elements of India rather than the overly ornate items. The furniture pieces are finds on either Amherst or St-Laurent [streets] in Montreal.

Kitchen and Dining room

We had to be careful with the dining room because it’s a small section of a larger room. It was important to denote it without separating it too much with the rest of the space. We created extra built-in cabinetry on the dining room side of the kitchen to store our china, bar and small appliances.

Our lovely bedroom

We love waking up in this room every morning because it’s so bright and airy. The walls are actually a very light purple. We used a subtle purple color because I read somewhere that purple promotes creativity, and we opted for high-gloss paint to add another texture to the room. By adding the slight color and keeping the room simple, we (ideally) start every day inspired!

Easy To Design Your Kitchen Cabinet Yourself

1. To add a little flair, take out a few drawers and insert low baskets in their place. You will probably have to remove the middle drawer slide or side slides, but that is easily done with a screwdriver.

2. Tired cabinet doors? Cut out the middle of the doors, leaving a two inch edge all around. Stale fabric panels to the back of the doors. Cover the staples with fabric trim glued with a hot glue gun. You can use any fabric from elegant to country, stripes to plaid, or gingham to quilted.

What Your Kitchen Needs

Cooks of all experience require a set of tools. Measuring cups are a must as are measuring spoons. Mixing bowls are necessary if you are going to be preparing a dish with multiple ingredients. Toaster, mixer (either hand held or a stand), and graters are other necessary tools. You will probably want a can opener. You may prefer the electric kind but you may want to get a manual one in case the electricity goes out. I have lost my electricity and wanted to open a can but only had an electric can opener. First thing I did was purchase manual can opener so I could eat! Don’t forget the slotted spoons, spatulas, and strainer.
