An interior designer talk about her home decor
By Helen Racanelli
When I did the mural on the ceiling in the bathroom, I had just moved up to Montreal. These designs, known as Alpona, are usually painted on the floors but because I felt a little like my life turned upside down, somehow painting the ceiling was a way to make me feel at home in an unknown city. When I did the mural on the ceiling in the bathroom, I had just moved up to Montreal. These designs, known as Alpona, are usually painted on the floors but because I felt a little like my life turned upside down, somehow painting the ceiling was a way to make me feel at home in an unknown city.

The vanity was custom-made to match the kitchen but we added one of my designs onto the vanity and mirror to make it more fun. Our first purchase as husband and wife was the washer/dryer set. Coming from a small apartment in New York with questionable laundry facilities, this was a momentous occasion for me and I refuse to cover it or hide it. This room is now my favorite space in the apartment!
The entryway was a spur of the moment weekend project last summer. This space is on it’s own floor so we kept it black and white to offset all the colors in the rest of the house.

The main living area is a constant evolution for us as it’s usually the initial resting space for all of our new purchases. The ceilings are very high so bookcases not only store our large collection of books but also bring the eye up! The colorful elements in the room are great travel finds from street artisans around the world. We appreciate the folk elements of India rather than the overly ornate items. The furniture pieces are finds on either Amherst or St-Laurent [streets] in Montreal.

Kitchen and Dining room
We had to be careful with the dining room because it’s a small section of a larger room. It was important to denote it without separating it too much with the rest of the space. We created extra built-in cabinetry on the dining room side of the kitchen to store our china, bar and small appliances.
Our lovely bedroom
We love waking up in this room every morning because it’s so bright and airy. The walls are actually a very light purple. We used a subtle purple color because I read somewhere that purple promotes creativity, and we opted for high-gloss paint to add another texture to the room. By adding the slight color and keeping the room simple, we (ideally) start every day inspired!
