Ampersand is an american design collective composed of shea springer and tim karoleff. the two collaborate
to create furniture and lighting they maintain ‘will serve you well’. they only have a few designs under their
belts, including the ‘bloom’ pendant lamp which features a petal-like adjustable shade and geometric storage
system ‘wall pockets’. their ‘sputnik’ lounge chair is their most complex pieces that uses a metal base upon
which the seat and back rest are stacked. a small wooden piece is attached to lock the pieces in place.

This decorative vessel features an incised stylized lotus design. Designed in the style and spirit of art nouveau, it has been formed on the potter’s wheel, skillfully carved and glazed, then fired using an American variation of the Japanese technique of raku to a temperature of approximately 1825 F.

This is a wheel-thrown stoneware clay vase form, burnished via terra sigillata, low-fired once for stability and then primitive pit fired for color and design. This piece is gallery priced between $75 and $88, depending on the gallery location. PLEASE NOTE that my information about “gallery pricing” is not some ridiculously inflated pie-in-the-sky value, but is drawn from my 17 years selling similar work in high-end craft galleries and shops.

Made of Alabama clay found near our studio, this pot was formed on the potters wheel, decorated using a warm looking satin matt spodumene glaze and a sculpted finial, then high-fired in a gas kiln to approximately 2400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Pendant lighting is comparatively a baby in respect to other type of lights in the same category starting from the Huge Chandeliers. Actually if history is right, Pendant lights came into existence just as a useful substitute but a less detailed version of Chandeliers with almost same features and functionality. In fact it derived its name from pendant, a jewelry accessory. Its typical history dates back to 2700 B.C. It started with hanging lamps of clay with light given by an animal fat burn which was the way Greeks devised. As time past, clay lamps were replaced by Glass. In the 80s, European pendants began to appear with exclusive use of glass designs as pendants with attractive shades.

These days I am interested in gold, silver Leaf gilding decoration,  and I got some knowledge from Art Gilding. Metal leaf gilding is the application of thin leaves of metal to any surface. How to do Water Gilding

Water gilding applied to a picture frame must be preceded by thorough preparation of the frame surface.  This begins with the application of finely applied layers of gesso.  The gesso then is sanded to a finish as smooth as porcelain and covered with a thin layer of burnishing bole (colored clay) that will receive the gold leaf.

Next, “gilder’s liquor” is applied, and the water gilding begins.  The “liquor” activates sizing in the clay, which adheres the gold leaf and enhances the luster of the gold when burnished.

Alan notes, “I use the old, time-honored method of gilding.  I mix all of my own substances and can change them depending on the desired tone and finish.  One can really see a difference between the result of water gilding as opposed to more contemporary methods.  The difference is certainly worth the meticulous process.” (via)
