Antique Cottage Style Bedroom Designs

Oak Inspired

Dark interiors are brought to life with the addition of clean white bedding and linens. Floral details on the shams and duvet serve as a rustic compliment to the raw oak in the exposed support beam and dry-stacked hearth with stones that could otherwise be bulky and cold. Additional feminine details like the painted, antique chest at the edge of the bed, aged chandelier lend themselves to creating a comforting cottage appeal.

An early-1800s Southern rope bed features a headboard that can be removed or be hooked into an upright position, ostensibly to encourage air circulation in summer and to block drafts in winter. Pine shutters serve as a neutral counterpoint and perfect pair for the rooms, aging green-painted walls. Ornate touches are limited to an elegant, antique light fixture in order to compliment but not overtake the quiet feel of the room.

Kitschy Room

In the master bedroom, a vintage French sewing cabinet doubles as a headboard. The motor-court sign was discovered at a local antique show and serves as an eye-catching and whimsical focal point around which additional seating and light fixtures are placed.

Animal Motifs

Create a one-of-a-kind setting and show how much you care about your animals with grace and just a touch of humor. A handsomely carved c. 1905 English bed found helps create a cozy feel in the master bedroom; balloon shades soften the double-hung windows. The bed had been fitted with a patchwork pinwheel quilt and is adorned with whimsical needlepoint pillows featuring various dog breeds.

Tassels and Textiles

An antique quilt rests on an aged blanket chest; and old ticking fabric covers the lampshade; netting forms a delicate canopy on the 19th-century mahogany American bed and gossamer curtains from Pine Cone Hill are at the windows.

Interior Color Scheme–Adding Black To Your Room

Black Berries

Black Berries

Black storage ottomans and side tables add a sleek silhouette to this red kitchen and living room. Don’t underestimate the power of graphic pillows to pump up a simple color scheme. Here, cherry blossom pillows keep a charcoal-gray sofa looking chic, not drab.

Let your fun, funky spirit come out with an outrageous wall color. Just tame it with touches of black: a sleek picture frame and mismatched black chairs do the trick.
One-Touch Wonder

A room as cheery as this country dining room needs a place for the eye to rest — simple black dining chairs fit the bill without calling too much attention to themselves.

Start Small
Start Small
If you’re nervous about adding black to a room, start small by coating minor architectural details in black. The inside walls of a built-in and portions of the wall set apart by molding are ideal for these small touches.

Two Shades of Black

Mixing styles in black is a definite can-do. Here, a new-again damask print in black and white sits atop an antique black table. The shared colors pull them together for an elegant look.

Turn-of-the-century furnishings include painted half shutters across the bottom of the windows and a swag of striped fabric across the top.

Consider Curtain Lining

Consider Curtain Lining

Line curtains with thick, dark fabric to cut down on glare in naturally bright rooms. Lining also helps protect drapes from dust and color fading.

Unifying Design

Yellow and blue toile covers French doors in the dining room and windows in the kitchen, unifying the two separate spaces.
