Using Hand Painted Ceramic Tiles In Your Bathroom
Hand painted ceramic tiles and tile murals are representative of patterns and colors indigenous to certain cultures and countries. Others convey a retro design that harkens back to different eras and styles. While covering an entire wall or floor with hand-painted designs may be a bit extreme, using hand-painted tiles as a border or scattered throughout your tile work is a great way to expand on your room’s theme.
You can also find many tiles that are not only hand-painted but are textured or embossed as well. These tiles add yet another layer of texture to the look of your overall design. Because they are original and done by hand, you will notice slight irregularities and contrasts that will only add to the designer look of your room.
Murals are one of the best uses of hand-painted tile work. Artists who specialize in custom, hand-painted tiles and most especially murals will be able to take any concept and re-create it for your room. For instance, if you would like one wall of your bathroom to represent a scene from an Italian villa, you only need request it. Any picture from your childhood, any landscape scene, or many reproductions of great artwork can be reproduced and hand-painted as a tile mural.
There are also companies that specialize in reproducing the look of hand-painted tiles and murals, but in actuality the process is mass-produced by machine. These textiles have the advantage of appearing to be handmade, but the price of these tiles is much less. Choosing this avenue of decor will limit you however, since only certain scenes or styles are available to the consumer.
Truly handmade pieces can cost anywhere from $5-$100 for one single 4-inch square tile. Tile murals are usually hundreds of dollars for a mural as small as 12″ x 18″. Many artists display their work on their websites and you can find many others displaying their wares at arts and crafts shows throughout the country. There you can see examples of their work and get an idea of how much you will need to spend in order to create a room using these bathroom tile designs.
